‘Tis the season that makes our toasty summers worth it. We can’t think of a better way to get into the holiday spirit than by attending one, two or all the following can’t miss holiday events that our Valley offers.
Share in the magic of the holiday season by attending this classic rendition of “The Nutcracker” brought to you by the children’s performance troupe Ballet Etudes. This is the story of a little girl who meets a larger-than-life Mouse King that battles the Nutcracker Prince and his toy soldier brigade. Opens at 7pm Friday, December 8, 2017 at the Mesa Arts Center. Additional showings and backstage tours are also available. Admission is $25-$29 (lap child: $6).
Ugly sweaters and reindeer antlers are welcome at these festive, family/dog friendly 12k, 6k and 1.2k runs/walks. Other activities include Santa’s Pet Village, where more than 40 local animal rescue groups will offer pet adoptions; a gift bazaar, with over 50 vendor booths; and Christmas carolers singing loud and clear for everyone to hear. This is a two-day only event – December 9th and 10th. Walk/run times vary as do race fees. Admission is free.
Everyone loves a parade, right? For one night only – Saturday, December 9th – you can see a parade like no other. The 19th Annual Fantasy of Lights Boat Parade taking place at Tempe Town Lake features a procession of festively decorated boats of all shapes and sizes. Santa arrives in Tempe Beach Park by way of boat as well. Festivities also include live entertainment, holiday shopping, and fireworks. There will also be donation boxes throughout the park for United Food Bank’s peanut butter drive. Free admission.
Swimming with Santa and Mrs. Claus
Santa’s ultimate getaway? Sunny Tempe. The Kiwanis Recreation Center’s Indoor Wave Pool is pleased to be his and Mrs. Claus’s first stop. Children and adults alike can ride the waves with Santa and have story time with Mrs. Claus for one day only; Saturday, December 30 from 1-5pm. Holiday music, games, cookies and milk, and free prizes are also part of the fun. Kids 2-12 are $5 and kids 13+ are $7. Advance tickets are on sale now.
